A Busy Month!

Dear Friends,
Wow! The calendar says October 1st!
It’d be hard to believe if the morning temperatures weren’t in the upper 30s and lower 40s. The seasons are definitely changing.
The calendar says a lot more than just it being October. With it being October, comes much more. But before I highlight what’s to come, let’s look briefly at what’s begun in September. On Rally Sunday, September 9, we kicked off our Fall preaching and worship theme, “Together: Created for Community” with a beautiful outdoor worship service in our pavilion. God blessed us with perfect weather! That series concluded this past Sunday, September 30 after looking throughout the month each Sunday how we were not only created for community, but called to community, united in Christ as part of a community, and finally sent out with the Spirit to broaden our community of faith. As we celebrated this theme of community we also spent three weeks at adult bible studies on Wednesday nights looking closely at our strengths and God-given talents and how we might want to use them to inspire our community of faith. In addition, our confirmation program began with an expanded age group including 6-8 graders. We have six students in the program this year. Sunday school is underway thanks to many dedicated volunteers. In a nutshell, that was September. Now, onto October …
October highlights include:
  • Adopt-a-Highway Roadside Clean-up – October 7 at 11:00 a.m. – Meet at church. This is an excellent opportunity to serve your church and your broader community. It’s fun for individuals, couples, or entire families! If you haven’t participated before, please consider it this year.
  • Children’s Sabbath Sunday – October 14 – This service will include a baptism, our youth bell choir, our annual cradle rock, and the presentation of 3rd grade Bibles. Please plan on attending this day if possible, to celebrate the children among us and the important role they play in our community of faith.
  • Laity Sunday – October 21 – This is a special day each year where some of our lay leaders provide the worship leadership. This year, members Tom Ervasti and Tom Lundberg will be preaching and leading worship. We are blessed to have so many willing and interested members who are ready to fill these roles as needed. This too, will be a special day, so please plan to attend if possible.
  • Stewardship Sunday – October 28 – Watch your mail for a special letter from the church on behalf of me and the Chairs of the Finance and Staff Parish Relations Committees, Scott Lecy and Jim Caldwell. This letter will inform you of our upcoming Fall Stewardship Appeal as we seek to accomplish God’s mission and vision for us in 2019. In addition to the mailing, opportunities to hear more about this will be provided on Sundays, October 14, 21, and 28.
Well, that’s October in a nutshell. Mark your calendars and prepare for a busy month at First UMC.
Two other side notes to remind you of:
  • Don’t forget to subscribe to our new Weekly eNews. This weekly email comes directly to your phone or computer and includes upcoming worship notes, upcoming events and activities, the confirmation schedule, and links to our full google calendar, the weekly preaching texts, my sermons (audio or video) and my current and past blog entries. Subscribe by clicking here and watch for it in your email box every Monday morning, bright and early.
  • Lastly, our Wednesday evening adult Bible study throughout October will be based on our weekly preaching texts and is called Daily Discipleship. It will be an opportunity to hear the text read, discuss it, and find out where I might go with it when preaching. This will provide an interactive opportunity into the study of the preaching text. Bring your Bible – and a friend!
That’s all for now. Enjoy these cool, crisp days of Fall, pick some apples, and mulch (or rake) those leaves 🙂
See you in Church!
